Okay, here’s the secret. You can make your own colloidal oatmeal at home! Okay, I said it. And it’s true. You don’t have to spend the money to buy your soothing bath powder. With some insight, a little time, and equipment of your choice, you can make it yourself.
What you’ll need:
Oatmeal
To get started, you’ll need oatmeal. The easiest way is to buy oatmeal you get at the grocery store. Make sure you don’t get the “instant” kind. Get the organic brand if you want.
Something to Grind Up Your Oatmeal
This part is up to you. Use whatever you have to grind the oatmeal into the finest powder possible, so it dissolves easily in your lukewarm bath. This could be anything from a blender (the Ninja works pretty good), a food processor, a coffee grinder, mortar and pestle, or my favorite, a Kitchen Mill. Mine is older, but works great and will grind up your oatmeal nearly as fine as the store-bought packets. You can get one here. They are a little pricier, but work a lot better than a coffee grinder or blender. I like to grind up an entire can of oatmeal at one time, then keep it dry and use when needed.
That’s it. Grind up enough colloidal oatmeal to make it worth the mess, and give some to your friends.
Here’s the final result:
Bathe in the oatmeal and your skin will love you. Have fun. It can help relieve the itch of things like poison ivy to eczema to chiggers and bug bites.
